Wayne Craig
Class of '65

Wayne Craig is a 1965 graduate of Mukwonago High School.

Wayne set the standard for cross country excellence not only at Mukwonago High School, but for runners throughout Wisconsin in the early 1960s, recording three top-ten state meet performances – including two individual titles – during his three-year career.

After talking him into coming out for the squad as a sophomore in 1962 to run on Mukwonago’s first-ever cross country team, Craig’s Coach, Jim Allen, ran him in the junior varsity race in his first meet.  Craig had come out for the team late, and Allen wanted to see what kind of shape the newcomer was in.  Not only did Craig win the JV race, but his time also beat every varsity runner.  At this point, Allen felt it prudent to move Craig onto varsity.  Craig finished that initial season with a tenth-place effort at the small school state meet.

Although Allen moved on to coaching success at Marquette University, Craig returned the next year to win the small school division state title, leading Mukwonago to a fourth-place team finish.  As a senior, Craig led Mukwonago to the 1964 team championship and repeated his individual title in a small school division state record time for the 2.2-mile distance.

Wayne was also a standout in track & field.  His junior year he placed fifth in state in the one mile run.  He followed up his senior year with a conference championship and a second place finish at state in the mile run.

Craig went to UW-Madison where he ran briefly.  He currently lives in Mukwonago area and works for the Village of Mukwonago.

Last January Wayne was inducted into the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Assistant Hall of Fame.  Wayne certainly left his mark at MHS.
