Cal Danielson
TEACHER/COACH/ATHLETIC DIRECTOR/VICE-PRINCIPAL
Cal was a teacher, coach, athletic director and vice
principal at MHS from 1949 through 1966. He was the head coach of the football,
basketball, and baseball teams. As athletic director Cal was instrumental in
expanding the program to include track, volleyball, wrestling and golf.
Cal’s teams amassed records of . . . football 96-19,
basketball 106-29, and baseball 91-8. He would coach track after baseball
practice and had an impressive run in that sport also including coaching Bill
Hinz to the state championship in the 100-yard dash.
Cal pioneered the use of mouth guards in football and was
instrumental in pursuing the National Association to mandate their use.
Locally Cal was the driving force to fundraise the lighting
of Field Park where the football was played. Cal is quick to point out he is
most proud of his sons Mike and Bruce, both of whom were standout
student-athletes at MHS.
