Kimberly Thornton
Class of 1989

Kimberly Thornton was a three sport athlete at Mukwonago High School, earning a total of 8 letters in soccer (4), basketball(2), and volleyball (2), before graduating in 1989.  She served as captain of various teams during her athletic career, earned MVP honors, and received conference honors in Basketball and Soccer.  Her senior year she was named Female Athlete of the Year and a WIAA Scholar Athlete.  A favorite memory remains throwing in a backside rebound her junior year for a last second win against Racine Horlick in the sectional final, sending the girl’s basketball team to state in 1988.

After graduation, Kim attended the University of Notre Dame, where she played Division One soccer her freshman year.  Coaching and program changes led her to focus on her studies, and she graduated with honors in 1993.  Subsequent to graduation, Kim moved to Europe for work, and continued to play club soccer for more than a decade.  In 2004, she earned her FA youth soccer license while acting as an assistant coach with the Tottenham Hot Spurs girl’s program in London.

Kim resides in Austria with husband Gunther, and children Marie Kay (5), and Koloman (3).  She earned her MA in urban planning in 2000, and worked as a project manager for Pritzker Prize winning architect Zaha Hadid in London before starting an office for architecture and urbanism with her husband in 2005.

Kim is thankful for the many lessons in teamwork, discipline, and motivation that her youth and high school coaches shared with her, and for the simple joys of athletics and camaraderie that she learned from her teammates.  Kim is grateful to her parents, Sue and Duane, and brother Kevin for always standing by her and cheering her on, no matter what the score, and to her early soccer coaches Craig Nickelbein, Tom Evans, and Milan Nikolic, who gave a group of little girls a chance to play.
